Ball-by-Ball Commentary

    IND· 30 Sept 2026, 10:55 pm

A day to remember for the ball-bashers, a day to forget for the bowlers. With these small boundaries and such flat pitches, no score is safe. Imagine, India chased down 406 with 6.3 overs to spare without dew. Had there been dew, where will the bowlers hide? But to dominate the bowlers this way needs skill. And Shubman was top drawer. Rohit was enjoyable. Jangoo and Campell were outstanding and Shai Hope was smart. Two games straight where the bowlers struggled in the powerplay. West Indies have leaked 706 runs in 85.1 overs and picked just 4 wickets across two games. And to think that next game is in Gill's own backyard, where it could be another road rolled out, good luck being a bowler! That's it for tonight. We will be back on Saturday nice and early. Take good care of yourselves!

Shubman Gill | India captain | PoTM: [On how he looks to have not broken a sweat] I mean, I think every part of my body is cramping right now, and it was very hot in the afternoon. When we had about 13 overs, it was feeling like we have already fielded for 20-25 overs, the way they were batting. So great game, I think. [On his second double hundred and his thoughts on the innings] I mean, at the halfway mark, 400 on the board, there was a bit of pressure on us. Never, no matter how good the wicket is, no matter how small the ground is, chasing 400 is never easy. So very pleased with the performance and very happy that I was able to stay till the end and finish the game for the team. [On his mindset and what he taps into during his current run of form] Honestly, it's just about playing, I break the game into small parts. First, we had a target in the powerplay that if we get around 75-80 runs without losing any wicket, that would be a good start. Initially, the ball might do a bit with the new ball. Once the ball gets old, the wicket would get much better to bat on, and one side was very short, so we thought we're going to target that side whenever the fast bowlers come on. And at about 25 overs, I thought if we are around 200-210, we'll be in a good space. But I think we were around 230-240, and I think after the powerplay, the pressure never really was on us. It was more on them, and we didn't lose any wickets up until halfway through our innings, so that was a great bonus for us. [On the conditions and India's bowling] I thought initially we didn't bowl that well in the powerplay, much similar to the first game as well. We didn't bowl well in the powerplay, and they batted with a lot of freedom. They batted quite well, and I think at one point it looked like they might get even 420-430. And to be able to pull the game back, even if it's 25-30 runs, was a bonus for us at the back end of the innings. [On whether India could make changes for the final ODI after clinching the series] Yeah, maybe. I definitely want to give the players who haven't had a chance, give them a chance, and hopefully we'll see what combination suits us and they'll get some chance.

Shai Hope | West Indies captain: [On the disappointment of losing the second ODI and what positives West Indies can take from the game] There was a lot of positives I can take from it, to be honest. I mean, you look at the batting side of things, we as a batting group, we've been putting up a lot of consistent competitive totals. So that's one tick that you can put. But yeah, obviously, when you come up against some of the greatest batters in the world, the margin for error is so slim, and it's going to be very difficult if you're going to give them a start like that. So still have to give credit where it's due. I think they played really well, but if we really want to be critical, probably could have been a little bit tighter with the ball and gave ourselves a better chance with 400 on the board. [On West Indies' batting and whether the similarities from the first ODI - a strong start followed by key wickets at the wrong stage - happened again today] Not as much. I thought we laid a foundation really well. It's something that we spoke about over the last couple of days, just about making sure we have some wickets in hand going into the back end of the innings. We were in on the side that their spinners are the main threat when it comes to these conditions. So yeah, we were just about laying that foundation and then finding ways to continue and get that impetus going in the back end. [On the conditions and whether Vitel Lawes' introduction was delayed because of the situation or the conditions] A bit of both. Situation-based. You don't really want to give him the hardest over to the bowl, especially coming to India for the first time. But it's not saying I don't expect him to come and do a great job. It's just you want to make him feel as comfortable as possible, especially when he's coming to play in these conditions. He's very young, but it's great to see that he came up and raised his hand. He bowled a really good spell, obviously a lot to learn, but I'm sure he's going to keep going all strong.

Rohit (2/2): [On the challenge of batting after spending the first innings fielding in the heat] Yeah, again, that comes down to concentration. You've got to keep telling yourself that do not throw it away, because here conditions are challenging, but that's where I wanted to just bring my experience of playing for so many years. You just don't want to give it that easily, try and stay as much as possible in the game, and we knew that the pitch was good, and we needed big runs from the top order, and that's exactly what happened. We had a very good partnership at the top, and that pretty much sealed the game for us. 250-odd run partnership there. Like I said, it was amazing to watch Gill on the other side, and yeah, glad we could finish on the high. [On Jadeja asking about his hundred celebration] Yeah, he was asking me what was that about. I said I'll tell you in the dressing room. It's for me. But he was quite innovative. He wanted me to come and slide and jump, and that's how he wanted me to celebrate. I said, man, after 50 overs of fielding and batting almost for 25-30 overs, I was never going to do that.

Rohit Sharma (1/2): [On his 35th ODI hundred and the meaning behind his celebration] I keep that celebration for myself. Ah, it's for me. It's for me. Some things are just meant to be with you. It's not to be shared. So yeah, that was for me. [On batting with Gill and their 200-plus run partnership while chasing 400] Yeah, absolutely. I think, like you said, wicket was good. We just wanted to continue to keep batting. We were not thinking too much about the scoreboard, to be honest. We were just trying to play according to the merit of the ball, and we kept stitching the partnership, which was, I think, when you're chasing a target like that, you need to keep stitching big partnership, and that's what we did. Gill was fantastic on the other side, very much in control of his batting the entire innings, and to stay not out till the end was fantastic to see as well.

22:12 Local Time, 16:42 GMT, 22:12 IST: Brilliance, cruelty, mediocrity - what a ride it was today. The team batting second hardly broke their belief even when the target was 406. And a player who is not just their captain, but the No. 1 ODI batter now, led the show. Campbell, Jangoo, Hope ran the show in the first innings. Gill and Rohit took the baton from them and put on an epic 255-run opening stand. The bowling was ordinary on a lot of occasions, but the batting was unbelievably fearless overall. Batters forced the bowlers to give up. It didn't feel like an ODI for most parts. It resembled a T20 game where batters came and swung freely without fear. And the alarming part was they were able to be that bossy for 80 odd overs. To think that India chased down 406 with 39 balls to spare - to be honest it could have been over even earlier had they pressed harder at the end - with 8 wickets in hand is simply outrageous.
